Things French Women Don’t Apologize For

The first time it lands is at a brasserie in the seventh, somewhere around noon. You order a salad — because you’re American, and because that’s what you’ve been told to order at lunch — and the woman at the next table orders steak frites and a glass of red. She doesn’t look at you. She doesn’t apologize for it. She’s not making a point. She’s just having lunch.

I’ve been collecting these moments for a decade. The catalog, in no particular order, of things French women don’t apologize for.

Eating bread at every meal. Not artisanal heritage sourdough as a wellness event. Just bread. The basket that comes with the meal, refilled without ceremony. Butter on it, often. They have not received the memo that wheat is a moral position.

Saying no without an explanation. Non. Full stop. No so sorry, no it’s just that, no five-sentence wind-up. The American instinct to soften every refusal with a paragraph of throat-clearing is genuinely confusing to them. No is a complete sentence in any language; in French, it’s a complete paragraph.

The two-hour lunch. We’ve made the case for this elsewhere. They are not eating for two hours because they’re indulgent. They’re eating for two hours because eating in twelve minutes at a desk is what’s strange.

Not being a morning person. Cheerfulness before 10 a.m. is an American export. The French move into the day slowly, with coffee, in silence, often in a robe. The 5 a.m. gym class is not a French invention and never will be.

Wearing the same thing twice. Or four times. A French woman has roughly nine pieces of clothing she actually likes. She wears them in rotation, for years. Nobody is keeping a chart. The phrase capsule wardrobe is, to her, what artisanal sourdough is — a marketing translation of a thing she was already doing.

Aging. This is the big one. There is no French equivalent of aging gracefully because there is no French anxiety about aging that requires the qualifier. They get older. They look older. They are not, as a culture, being asked to look twenty-six at fifty-two.

Wanting nothing for an afternoon. A Sunday in August where she does not produce, post, optimize, or attend. Just reads. Just sits. The American what did you do this weekend question lands like a small accusation; the French shrug — rien — is not a confession.

They get olderThey look older

Keeping a private life private. What she did last weekend is not for the table. What her therapist said is not for the table. The French distinction between an intime and a connaissance is sharper than ours; the perimeter is real. You earn your way in. The American instinct to overshare on a first meeting — trauma small talk, as one friend calls it — reads to her as a kind of category error.

Being moody. A French woman is allowed to be in a bad mood without making a project out of it, naming it, journaling it, or apologizing for it. She’ll come back around. She doesn’t owe you sunshine.

Not being charming on demand. The polite American smile to the stranger on the street, in the elevator, in the waiting room — the social labor of constant low-grade pleasantness — is not an obligation she signed. She nods. She moves on. She is not being rude. She just isn’t performing.

Pleasure. Wine at lunch. A cigarette at forty if she wants one. Sex at sixty. A nap. A second pastry. An afternoon in bed with someone who doesn’t pay her rent. The hour at the barn. The American instinct to call any of this self-care — to medicalize, justify, and timestamp pleasure — is, to her, the strangest thing about us.

What this list is really about:

There is a kind of permission American women keep waiting to be granted — to rest, to want, to refuse, to age, to not perform — and the French woman is not waiting, because she never accepted that it was someone else’s to give.

That’s what Pleasure Living means on this site. Not an aesthetic. Not an export. A small, internal repositioning. The thing you stop apologizing for is, eventually, the thing you get to live.

You don’t have to move to Paris.

You can start with the bread.
